John Aromando Presenter at 2015 Maine State Bar Association Summer Meeting: What to Tell Your Client When You Make a Mistake

Pierce Atwood litigation partner John J. Aromando will be presenting this session at the upcoming 2015 MSBA summer meeting, taking place in Bar Harbor, Maine. John will discuss what a lawyer should tell a client upon realizing that he or she has committed an error in the handling of the client’s case. The presentation will include a review of the lawyer’s obligations under the Maine Rules of Professional Conduct, including Rules 1.4 and 1.7, as well as the most recent case law and ethics opinions and guidance on this subject. It will cover not only what to tell the client, but also when and how this communication should occur. This will include balancing the lawyer’s ethical obligations with the issue of the lawyer’s potential liability arising from the error, and when to advise a current client to seek independent legal advice.
