Jim Erwin ELA Webinar Moderator: Distressed Institutions of Higher Education – An Exploration of Options

As we emerge from the global COVID-19 pandemic, many higher education institutions are finding that the enrollment, fiscal, and competitive challenges they faced before are even more obvious post-pandemic.

Some institutions are facing the stark realization that any sustainable path forward requires major strategic and operational changes, which could include the sale of assets, significant downsizings, renegotiation of collective bargaining agreements, leases and other long-term debt and legal obligations, mergers, and consolidations.

The panel, comprised of a business professor, financial restructuring lawyer, and labor and employment attorneys, and moderated by Jim Erwin, Chair of Pierce Atwood’s Employment Practice Group and former Chair of the a former University of Maine System Board of Trustees, will consider a hypothetical troubled university and explore the critical risks, opportunities, and decisions confronting distressed higher education institutions today.
