Pro Bono Success in Property Tax Dispute for Nonprofit Animal Sanctuary

Pierce Atwood successfully represented, on a pro bono basis, an 800-acre nonprofit facility that cares for hundreds of abused and neglected animals in Maine, after the town in which the facility is located refused to grant the property tax exemption to which the facility was entitled.

Following a five-day trial, the Maine Superior Court ruled that the vast majority of the property should have received a property tax exemption going back to 2016.

The large tax refund owed to the facility will make a huge difference in its ability to care for Maine’s abused and neglected animals.
