Pierce Atwood Receives Hale Education Community Service Award

Hale awards Dan Bailey its Outstanding Service Award

At Hale Education’s Fall Equinox Celebration held on September 25, 2025, Hale provided Pierce Atwood with their Community Service Award, and honored firm environmental, land use, and real estate attorney Dan Bailey with their Outstanding Service Award.

For the past few years, Dan has provided pro bono legal services to Hale Education to develop and draft a conservation restriction that would permanently protect from development more than 1,100 acres of land in Dover and Westwood, Massachusetts.

The proposed conservation restriction will ensure that more than 80% of the Hale property will be preserved in its open and natural condition, impacting hundreds of lower-income students and thousands of community members, and  it will have profound conservation and ecological benefits. When completed, this will be one of the largest areas of preserved land in eastern Massachusetts in the last 50 years.

Hale Education is a private nonprofit organization widely recognized for its flagship camps, youth programs, family and community activities, school partnerships, and professional development opportunities. For more than a century, Hale has helped adults and children learn, grow, and thrive in the outdoors.

In 2023, Dan received Pierce Atwood’s “Lancaster Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award” for his ongoing pro bono support in assisting Hale Education with this conservation restriction, and in 2022 he received the firm's McKusick Community Impact Award, presented annually to one attorney and one staff member who have made significant, positive impacts in their communities through pro bono and/or community service.

Hale Reservation began in 1918 as a result of Robert Sever Hale’s desire “to provide education which will develop intelligent, capable and responsible citizens” and to use the land “so long as it is charitable and benevolent in nature.” Today, Hale Reservation provides a wide range of educational and recreational opportunities for thousands of children, teens, and adults of diverse backgrounds and economic status, in an environment that helps develop self-confidence, inspire a passion for learning, and encourage an appreciation for the natural environment.
