Newell Augur has more than 25 years of experience in Maine in the fields of government relations and administrative law, cultivating long-standing relationships with state government officials and policy leaders. Over that time, he has been integrally engaged in the development of legislative and regulatory policy on a variety of issues including waste management, youth camps, elder care, fantasy sports, rental transportation, pharmaceutical research and general business development. He serves as the executive director of the Maine Beverage Association, the trade group of the state’s non-alcoholic beverage distributors.
Newell’s experience includes designing and executing his clients’ legislative strategy, enlisting and organizing stakeholders, serving as spokesperson for press events, and monitoring initiatives that affect client operations. He appears regularly on behalf of clients before state agencies, including the Maine Commission on Governmental Ethics and Election Practices where he represents both individuals and political action committees on a variety of campaign finance and ethics matters. He has led three successful statewide referenda campaigns, and served as legal and strategic counsel for several others.
Newell’s varied background includes founding Augur & Associates, a boutique law and government relations firm, clerking for a U.S. District Court judge in the Western District of Texas, working as a criminal and civil litigator in New York City, and serving as the business manager of a charter school in Harlem. He previously was director of legislative and public affairs for the Maine Department of Human Services where he was responsible for all aspects of the Department’s media strategy and oversight of legislative initiatives affecting human services programs.
A Portland native, Newell now lives in Yarmouth with his wife and three children and has served multiple terms on his town’s School Committee and Recycling Committee.
