Gulf of Maine Research Institute Zoning Amendment
In 2002 Pierce Atwood represented the nonprofit Gulf of Maine Research Institute in obtaining an amendment to the City of Portland ordinances to allow construction of GMRI’s new research laboratory on Commercial Street. The proposed Gulf of Maine Research Laboratory project was a permitted use and met all dimensional requirements of the Waterfront Central (WC) Zone, with the exception of the building height limitation. To address this issue, we proposed to increase from thirty-five feet to fifty feet the height limit that applied to buildings in the WC Zone that contain marine research, education, and laboratory facilities. We were successful in convincing the City Council to enact this amendment, and the GMRI facility has been operational now for a decade.
