We handle appellate cases covering a wide range of issues involving areas of federal law and significant areas of state and commercial law. Our lawyers have made numerous oral arguments before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals across the country and before the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. One of our attorneys, Catherine Connors, has argued over 100 appeals in the federal Courts of Appeals and the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Included in our group are the two most recent Chief Justices of Maine’s highest court, Daniel Wathen and Vincent McKusick.
Our appellate work arises both when we are retained solely for the appeal, and in cases we have first litigated before the trial court. We often are asked to prepare amicus curiae briefs in important cases on behalf of industry associations or coalitions, including amicus briefs submitted to the United States Supreme Court. As part of our practice, we work with clients to provide strategic legal thinking at the earliest stages to develop effective approaches to address complex legal, business and policy issues.
