Europe 
As prime contractor to a USAID regulatory reform project support in the legal and regulatory development of the energy sectors in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Kosovo, and Macedonia, to help prepare those governments to participate in the Regional Energy Market in South East Europe. We supported regulators in developing competency and autonomy by formulating, drafting and presenting primary and secondary legislation and training in effective regulatory techniques. For example:
Drafted and helped implement Albania’s new Market Model and prepared a legal assessment of existing energy laws
Assisted Bosnia and Herzegovina’s three separate regulators in drafting and adoption of primary and secondary energy laws establishing of an independent regulator and competency building, and prepared a legal assessment of the Rules of Procedures, Regulations and the Decision on the Organization of the Constitutional Court Services for the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina
Drafted Bulgaria’s new energy reform law
Assisted Croatia’s new regulators in developing tariff methodologies for generation, distribution and transmission services; analyzed Judicial Procedure Act and advised on Rule of Law issues, and advised Ministry, electric utility, Energy Institute and World Bank on proposals to amend draft energy laws and prepare for participation in regional electricity market
Reviewed Kosovo's energy regulatory accounting and reporting framework
Prepared Macedonia’s new energy law, assisted in the creation of new regulator and respective tariff structures, and advised on market design and strategies for the proposed privatization of power sector assets
On behalf of USAID, advised Armenia’s Ministry of Energy, the regulatory commission and national utility company on power purchase agreements and ratemaking issues
For the World Bank, currently advising the State Energy and Water Regulatory Commission in Bulgaria on water and wastewater related issues

Drafted new environmental trading law for Denmark’s electric power industry, achieved in collaboration with private sector attorneys and legal academic advisory committee and drafted protocols for trade in connection with sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and greenhouse gases offset emissions for power industry
As member of a multinational consortium provided advisory services in France with respect to creation of new European Power Exchange, for electricity and futures trading, including such issues as settlement contracts, bilateral contracts, renewable preferences, market rules, and other national and European practices, consistent with overall EU standards, and represented a U.S. digital and paper mapmaker and developer of CD-ROM and Internet-based mapping products, in obtaining patent rights
Led delegation of U.S. judges to Georgia at the request of the Chairman of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Georgia, and at the request of the Georgian government, drafted legislation and provided comments on the Georgian constitution, judicial, and civil codes
Represented German rotary machine manufacturer in prosecution of U.S. patent applications
Advised private sector and governmental bodies extensively on energy restructuring and privatization issues in Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Serbia, among other countries
Conducted assessments of regulatory reform, analyzing the status of and remaining needs for regulatory development in 16 participants in South East Europe, working closely with the EC and CEER to develop regulatory benchmarking standards, and produced three regulatory benchmarking reports, in 2003, 2004, and 2005
Supported the Ukrainian regulator in developing a Wholesale Energy Market Law and tariff formation for the power sector entities
Advised the Government of Hungary on market liberalization and reform, bilateral and multilateral trade, grid codes, creation of markets, competition, and associated contracts. Represented the biotech and diagnostic subsidiaries or divisions of a Swedish corporation since 1987 in various patent jury trials and other litigation filed in Maryland, New Jersey, Massachusetts and California; also provide advice to a number of Stockholm and Uppsala-based, biotech and high-tech ventures regarding various patent enforcement and strategic corporate issues.

Our attorneys advise and guide our U.S. clients through the complexities of international trademark clearance, filing strategies, maintenance, and use requirements in foreign jurisdictions, and we assist foreign clients and counsel protect valuable foreign-based trademarks in the U.S.. We work hard to devise comprehensive and cost-effective protection plans for trademarks and proactively enforce our client’s trademarks by instituting trademark watches, interfacing with our network of foreign counsel, and working with clients and their distributors to obtain information regarding trademark infringement and misuse. We act promptly using a variety of enforcement mechanisms to stop a third party’s use or intended use of a counterfeit or confusingly similar mark before the use threatens our client’s business.

Swedish
Our intellectual property work for Swedish and Finnish companies began in 1987 with the successful defense of two Pharmacia subsidiaries in a patent jury trial. Since then, our lawyers have successfully represented Pharmacia Biotech in three more trials, and have counseled a series of other companies that have spun off from Pharmacia on issues of patent enforcement, infringement, claim scope and freedom to operate in the US market. Our work for clients like GE Healthcare Biosciences, Phadia, Aerocrine, Affibody and others in the Stockholm/Uppsala region has grown to the point that Pierce Atwood opened an office in Stockholm in 2007 to facilitate communications with those clients. We also participate in SwedenBIO, the trade organization for the Swedish life science industry.
