Monday, October 03, 2016
Portland, ME

Hosted by University of Southern Maine, University of Maine School of Law, and Pierce Atwood, this conference will address the challenges and opportunities for Arctic science, business, shipping, security, and governance.

Conference topics include:

  • Maine’s Role in the Future of the Arctic
  • Arctic Science: Ice Melt & Climate Change
  • Arctic Shipping and Safety (moderated by Pierce Atwood Admiralty & Maritime partner Mike Daly)
  • Arctic Economic Council Overview

Speaking on these and other important issues will be legislators, experts, and academics with deep and expansive knowledge in Arctic policy, climate change, commerce, legal issues, and more.

A showcase of Maine-Arctic science, education, and cultural initiatives will be on display and participants will have an opportunity to network during the buffet luncheon and the closing reception with a special exhibit on the History of Maps of the Northwest Passage.

Pierce Atwood is also pleased to be a host site for one of several high-level meetings of the Arctic Council, in which senior Arctic officials from around the globe will come together in Portland to “promote cooperation, coordination, and interaction among the Arctic states, arctic indigenous people, and other inhabitants of the region on issues of common concern.” The US Department of State selected Portland for this high-level meeting “in recognition of Maine’s significant engagement in the Arctic region.”

While the Arctic Council meetings are closed to the public, the public is welcome to register for the conference and Arctic showcase on October 3.
