Hannaford Acquisition & Development of Cony Circle Grocery Store

Representation of Hannaford Bros. Co. in all transactional aspects for the acquisition and development of a new 48,000 square foot supermarket and pharmacy adjacent to Cony Circle in Augusta, Maine, approved as the first LEED platinum-certified grocery store in North America. The project was five years in the making, with three lawsuits filed by opponents of the project, two different mayors, and several different city council members. The site presented unique issues, such as title restrictions originating in the early 1900’s that required attorney general intervention to remove, negotiations with neighborhood groups, historic preservation groups and the city. The project is integrated with a historic building, with shared parking and access. The store opened on July 25, 2009.
