CMP Land Acquisition

Representation of Central Maine Power Company in all real estate matters related to the Maine Power Reliability Program, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Maine's history. The project includes a proposal to build, rebuild, or re-rate transmission lines in 360 miles of electrical transmission corridor, as well as build, expand, or upgrade 13 substations. The Real Estate Practice Group is coordinating and supervising the due diligence and transactional work for the acquisition of more than six hundred parcels of land and easements in six counties in central and southeastern Maine. In addition to the hundreds of relatively standard acquisitions, we have assisted Central Maine Power Company with the atypical situations by negotiating acceptable terms and preparing customized documents. We have also advised the company on legal issues related to subdivision, adverse possession, and the scope and status of existing easements related to this project. We have been heavily involved in negotiations and the preparation of agreements with respect to real estate rights needed from another electrical utility and former electrical generator. We have worked closely with the other practice groups within Pierce Atwood that are also engaged in this matter, most notably the Energy Practice Group and the Environmental and Land Use Group.
