Employment Breakfast: Employing Veterans

Many employers are aware of the special legal protections veterans of military service have. But there’s a lot more to employing veterans than just understanding USERRA. Veterans can bring significant extra value to the workplace. Sometimes there are difficult personal challenges caused by the military service of a veteran or a family member. Nevertheless, Maine’s veteran offer a potentially underutilized pool of employees with the kind of job skills employers sometimes struggle to find.

Our guest speaker will be Chris Tyll, the chair of the Portland Veterans Network, a former Navy Seal and the owner of Pat’s Pizza in Portland’s Old Port. Chris brings a unique perspective to the value and challenges of employing veterans and will help us develop a better understand of how to enjoy significant benefits from employing this unique class of citizens. We’ll be joined by representatives of the Chamber, and we’ll also provide a refresher on the key elements of federal and state laws affecting veterans in the workplace.
