Domestic violence continues to plague our society, and employers are not immune from its effects. For this program, we are fortunate to have two experts who bring very different perspectives to this very serious issue. Dan Wathen, former Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, made domestic violence a signature issue during his tenure on the court as he worked to increase awareness of the problem by educating the public about the pervasiveness of the problem, its effect on the workplace, and the challenges faced by the court system with the role society has required it to fulfill in dealing with its effects. Mel Attfield, Ph.D., is a practicing psychologist who counsels victims of domestic violence and regularly advises employers on workplace violence issues.
Please join us on November 8 when you will hear our speakers, hosted by Meg LePage, discuss issues such as:
- What are the effects – apparent and hidden – of domestic violence on the workplace?
- What are the red flags or predictors (both affective and predatory) for individuals who may become violent?
- What steps should employers take in responding to those red flags?
- How should employers handle employee discipline to avoid violent reactions?
- What can employers do to change the work environment to minimize violence?
- What are the rights and needs of victims of violence in the workplace?
- What steps can and should employers take against employees who may be perpetrators of domestic violence?
- What are the legal risks for employers?
We look forward to seeing you for a lively discussion of this very important issue.
