The ADA has been on the books for over 20 years, but the duty to provide a reasonable accommodation continues to provide challenges to employers. What impairments are considered disabilities? When is an employer on notice that a disabled employee needs an accommodation? What accommodations are reasonable? How should an employer document its participation in an interactive dialogue? When is it safe to terminate an underperforming employee who has requested accommodations? Adding to the complexities are changes in the ADA itself (2008), changes in regulations (2010), evolving case law, and advances in medical science and technology.
Please join Meg LePage and Katy Rand on October 13 for our first Employment Breakfast Series Program of the 2011-2012 "school" year, and the first at our new offices at Merrill's Wharf on the Portland Waterfront! The program will take place in our 5th Floor Conference Center. The program will begin at 8:00 a.m. and go to about 9:15. Merrill's Wharf is located at 254 Commercial Street. There are 10 visitor parking spaces on Merrill's Wharf next to our new building, available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional complimentary parking is available at Fisherman's Wharf for the duration of our breakfast programs. Fisherman's Wharf is located on Chandler's Road off Commercial Street, just west of the Portland Lobster Company. Please drive up to the booth and tell the attendant that you are parking for the Pierce Atwood Employment Program. You will receive a ticket to display in your window. Our office is just a short walk west on Commercial Street.
While we certainly prefer to see you in person, we understand that travel and scheduling issues sometimes make attendance difficult. Therefore, all our breakfast programs will be available for participation by teleconference and webcast. To RSVP, click here and be sure to indicate if you will be joining us in person or via teleconference. To join via teleconference, simply dial 1 (866) 244-1377 and use the following pass code: 7066387. Finally, we apologize for the error in our recent announcement regarding the date of the February breakfast – it is on Thursday February 9, not Sunday the 19th. View the full 2011-12 Employment Program here.
