Overview: Effective civil appellate advocacy requires much more than mastery of the applicable substantive law. It requires an understanding of how the Law Court makes decisions, and the most effective ways to advocate for the result you seek. This panel will help you improve your appellate practice through a discussion of the standards of review, procedural issues, and practice tips. The panel will examine the Court’s past application of the standards of review, and will discuss how best to describe and apply the pertinent standard in your case. The panel also will address procedural issues, including the submission of transcripts and appendices, and will share practice tips for presenting persuasive written and oral arguments.
